Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 1 episode 4 recap & review: Parallels and Interiors

In the fourth episode of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, Lee, Cate, Kentaro, and May attempt to survive in the cold regions of Alaska, where a titan resides. The episode is now streaming on Apple TV+.

Recap

In Utah, in 2015, a scientist named Barnes receives a weird reading and informs Monarch. Meanwhile, Lee, Cate, Kentaro, and May try to lose the ice-breathing titan coming after them.

While hiding in a cave, the ice formation that May is standing on breaks, and she gets wet. May will be fighting hypothermia soon if the group doesn’t get her warm.

Once the sun goes down, the temperature will drop by a minute. The group needs to find shelter. Kentaro says that he saw something from the plane—a golf ball-like structure.

The group agrees to find what Kentaro saw. Though they don’t see that structure, they see a blue light in the distance, but Kentaro is adamant about going in the direction where the structure is.

Only Kentaro has seen that structure, but they all can see the blue light. Since Kentaro believes in what he saw so much, Lee allows him to go in that direction. If he finds it, he will send help; if they find someone, they will send help. Kentaro and the rest of the group then part ways.

Barnes shares her radiation readings with Monarch. These kinds of radiation readings are usually seen in supermassive black holes in outer space. The last time anyone saw readings like these was before G-Day.

A meeting is arranged with the other officials. During the meeting, Tim tells everyone that they can’t dismiss Bill Randa’s files and that Lee knows something that they don’t.

Kentaro hears voices and falls to the ground while looking for the structure. Lee, Cate, and May, on the other hand, end up back at Hiroshi’s tent.

The group takes shelter in Hiroshi’s tent. May requests Cate to contact her sister if she doesn’t make it. The titan attacks a while later. The group manages to dodge the titan again. This time around, they learn that the titan is drawn toward the heat. Lee prepares a plan to take the titan out.

May instructs Cate to ditch her if the time comes. Similarly, she should ditch Lee too if that’s what it takes to survive. Kentaro manages to find the golf ball-like structure by following his visions and traces of pencil dust left behind by his father.

The titan appears near Hiroshi’s tent right when Cate, May, and Lee hear the sound of a helicopter nearby. Lee creates a huge blast that distracts the titan and also gets the attention of the helicopter.

Kentaro is with the people who have come to rescue Lee, Cate, and May. Everyone makes it out alive. As they fly away, Lee looks at the blue light that they were following.

Kentaro tells Cate that their father is still alive. Apart from that, Cate and May created a strong connection with each other after this adventure. The rescue squad takes the group to none other than Tim.

Amidst all of this, events from a year earlier reveal how Kentaro and May met and how Kentaro kept wondering if his father would come to his art show.

Review

  • The fourth episode of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is a dull affair and a disappointment compared to the first three episodes. It is completely devoid of any content or mystery.
  • The golf-like structure and the blue light keep things interesting for a while, making sure that viewers will keep watching and come back for more.
  • In the flashback, the episode explores the first meeting of May and Kentaro, while in 2015, they are unlike what they were before. The episode could have worked without these flashback scenes; just a conversation between them would have done the job of exploring their past.
