In Rick and Morty season 7 episode 1, Rick tries to stage an intervention for Mr. Poopybutthole to cut back on his booze after he overstays his welcome as a guest and upsets Rick’s family.
Mr. Poopybutthole has overstayed his welcome and Rick’s family is over it. The last domino tips over when his drinking gets out of control. Rick calls up his friends and sets up an intervention for PB.
However, when PB shows excitement and becomes emotional that they remembered his birthday, Rick and his friends have no choice but to pretend they did know about his birthday and are there to celebrate it.
They meet Hugh Jackman who takes them to his crib where they abuse hallucinogenics before Poopybutthole heads off to his ex-wife, the separation from whom caused his spiral.
The Predator he had hired as a PI to tail his ex turns out to be her current partner whom she and her son are very happy. They all fight the Predator but PB finally realizes that he’s the problem and that his wife and child are happy without him.
After a great hang, the group of friends disbands and go their separate ways back to their respective homes.
- The voice actors replacing Justin Roiland have done an impeccable job and while the differences in the voices may have been noticeable in the trailers, this season 7 premiere feels like there have been no new additions to the voice cast.
- Jackman delivers a funny performance and Beck Bennet is great too. The extended family doesn’t have much to do but it’s nice to see them have a relatively normal time at the dinner table before the season kicks off.
- Rick and Morty don’t have an adventure together in this episode but the one that Rick has is a great one. There are meta, self-referential jokes and the usual Harmon-y spiel but the relatively grounded nature of events is comforting.
