Tokyo Revengers season 2 episode 5 recap & review: Christmas Eve

The fourth episode of the second season of Tokyo Revengers explores the past connection between Hinata and Kisaki, which convinces Takemichi to make a difficult choice. The episode is now streaming on Hulu.

Recap

Kisaki declares that their secret battle to stop Hakkai and defeat Taiju will take place on Christmas night.

He adds that Mikey is not going to last long. Baji’s death affected him, but he still acts like it does not bother him. He believes that they need to support Mikey as much as possible to prevent Toman’s end.

Kisaki cannot use the Third and the Sixth Divisions, as the mission is a secret, so he needs Takemichi and Chifuyu. Ignoring Chifuyu’s protests, Kisaki asks Takemichi to give him an answer by the next day.

Chifuyu is opposed to the idea of working with Kisaki, but Takemichi believes that working with him can be used to their advantage. He does not want to kill Kisaki, but he wants him out of Toman.

Takemichi thinks that he might learn something about Kisaki while working with him that will aid him in getting Kisaki kicked out of Toman. Takemichi pleads with Chifuyu to work with him, and Chifuyu agrees.

Takemichi and Chifuyu give their answer to Kisaki and Hanma, but they make it very clear that this does not make them friends and that they are only going to work with them till Christmas.

Later, while talking to Hinata, Takemichi finds out that Hinata knows Kisaki; they went to the same cram school in elementary school. Kisaki was the smartest student at cram school, and Hinata thinks that he has a good heart as well.

As they lived near each other, they used to walk home together sometimes. However, Kisaki then went to a private middle school, and Hinata has not seen him since then.

Hinata also tells Takemichi that she was with Kisaki the first time she met him. Takemichi has no memory of that day, so Hinata recounts the story of how she tried to stop a few boys from torturing a cat.

The boys tried to bully her then, but Takemichi, clad in a cape and claiming to be a hero, stepped in and stood up to them even though he was scared. The boys beat him up, but Takemichi just scolded Hinata for not thinking before acting.

Hinata fell in love with Takemichi then and there because he came to help her, knowing that he is going to lose. Hinata bids Takemichi goodbye before going home and reminds him of their plan to meet at Umishita Park on Christmas eve.

Takemichi remembers that in the future, Hinata had told him that he broke up with her in Umishita Park on Christmas eve. Takemichi cannot think of anything that would motivate him to do that, as the day is just a week away.

Masato Tachibana approaches Takemichi and introduces himself as Naoto and Hinata’s father. He takes Takemichi to a coffee shop and thanks him. He believes that Naoto, who always hated his work, wants to be a police officer now because of Takemichi.

He then requests Takemichi to end his relationship with Hinata because he is a hoodlum, and Masato does not want his daughter to be dragged into it. Takemichi loves her, but he does as he is told and breaks up with Hinata on Christmas eve.

He lies to Hinata and tells her that he does not like her anymore. A heartbroken Hinata beats him up and leaves after telling him that she hates him. Takemichi cries but thinks this is for the best, as there is some sort of a link between him, Kisaki, and Hinata.

Takemichi, Chifuyu, Kisaki, and Hanma discuss their plan to defeat Taiju the next day. Taiju is going to pray at Udagawa Christ Church when the church will be empty at night.

If Hakkai wants to attack Taiju, he should already be inside the chapel. As Takemichi is his friend, he will have to go inside the chapel and convince him not to kill Taiju.

Chifuyu, Kisaki, and Hanma will wait outside the chapel and take Taiju down before Hakkai could attack him. Takemichi thinks that he will protect Hinata’s future anyhow this time.

Review

  • This episode did not have a lot going on in terms of plot development. It mainly focused on the link between Hinata and Kisaki. The future has been affecting Takemichi’s actions but this time, the past also has a hand in it.
  • The episode tried to depict Kisaki as a smart person, but his plan seems like a disaster in the making. It will be interesting to see what comes out of this secret mission in the next episode.
  • The show, by looking at Kisaki from Hinata’s perspective, added another layer to his character. It made the viewers curious to know whether he has already gone bad or that is yet to happen.
