In Demon Slayer season 3 episode 2, Tanjiro crosses paths with a young swordsmith apprentice butting heads with a Hashira.

Recap

Tanjiro feels hesitant to intervene into a little feud between a village kid and Tokito, one of the Hashiras. Tokito demands some sort of key from the kid who refuses to hand it over to him.

When Tokito become violent with his demands, however, Tanjiro is compelled to intervene, but he fails to make the Hashira budge, who only treats Tanjiro as a minor annoyance.

In response to Tokito’s continued verbal disrespect of the kid, Tanjiro vents out and gives a speech about the codependant relationship between swordsmen and swordsmiths. The kid is touched by his words but Tokito is only further annoyed, which he follows with a nonchalant attack on Tanjiro that knocks him out.

When he regains consciousness, Mr. Haganezuka, who was eavesdropping on Tanjiro’s exchange with Tokito, dashes away before the demon slayer can fully come to his senses. The kid and Tanjiro familiarize with each other.

His name is Kotetsu, a ten-year-old swordsmith apprentice who is the only one left in his family, making him responsible for the upkeep of the legacy that has been with his family for centuries.

It’s a mechanical doll called “Yoriichi Type Zero”, a contraption with six arms that can be used for combat training. To get it working, one needs to twist the key and wind it up, enabling the doll to perfom 108 moves that it’s been made capable of by design.

Kotetsu didn’t want to hand over the key because the doll is already in a pretty frail state, and anymore usage would surely break it. Since Kotetsu isn’t good with either swords or mechanical dolls, he truly can’t step up and keep his familial legacy intact, meaning it will all end with his generation.

Tanjiro understands the gravity of the situation but later consoles Kotetsu, before encouraging him to admit defeat and do his best to carry on the knowledge and craft for the next generations. Tokito is finished with his training, allowing for Kotetsu and Tanjiro to check up on the doll.

It has lost one of its arms but upon winding it up, it moves again, but instead of feeling relieved, Kotetsu is all revved up for revenge. He asks Tanjiro to train with the doll and become stronger than Tokito, for whom he has nothing but a mouthful of curses.

Tanjiro’s training begins and due to Kotetsu’s ignorance to general things as a ten-year-old, the demon slayer has to undergo a truly grueling training that spans days without food or water. During his training, he suffers many blows and setbacks until he makes a sort of breakthrough in his anticipatory skills.

He can now smell the moves about to be made, before even seeing his famed “thread” appear. He lands his first hit on the doll that earns him his first meal in days. With replenished stamina, he’s ready for another bout, and he finally takes a shot at the doll.

As he lands, he and Kotetsu see the doll’s face fall down, revealing a 300-year-old sword encased inside the body. As they stand gawking at the artifact, Demon Slayer season 3 episode 2 rolls the credits.

Review

  • Demon Slayer season 3 episode 2 goes by pretty fast, but there’s enough intersting things to chew on, most notable of them being the mechanical doll and the might it houses within it.
  • The mechanical doll gives but a glimpse at the sheer power and unmatched skill Yoriichi must have wielded in his time. However, his sword must give a better idea, and it makes the reveal of the sword and what it can do all the more exciting.
  • In Kotetsu the show gets a bit of a heartwarming and potentially motivational reprieve, and in Tokito there is yet another source of excitement for what lies ahead in the story.
