Invincible season 2 episode 2 recap & review: In about six hours I lose my virginity to a fish

In episode 2 of Invincible, Mark and his friends are figuring out how to spend their summer break, but Mark has to prioritize his superhero duties. The episode is streaming on Prime Video.

Recap

It is high school graduation day but Mark is busy fighting Doc Seismic at the Washington Monument. The Doc wants to reclaim all the raw materials stolen from the Earth to make buildings, and he’s starting at the monument to send a message.

Mark successfully defeats Doc Seismic and his magmanites but not after the Washington Monument suffers significant damage. He reaches his graduation in time to celebrate with his friends.

They all gather at Eve’s place afterward to discuss their summer plans. At the United States Space Agency, there’s a heated discussion about how to tackle the potential threat of the Martians.

One of the Martians took the guise of Russ Livingston and returned with the other astronauts. He has been trying to assimilate to human life but his commanding officer notices him acting strange and puts him on leave to take care of his mental health.

Repairs are happening in Chicago and Atom Eve speeds it up with her powers. The forewoman tells Eve that she startled her men and that what she fixed could possibly not be up to code.

One of the bystanders stands up for Eve and says that the city takes forever to take notice of their issues. The woman points to a vacant lot that she’s been begging the city to clean up for six years.

Eve uses her powers to turn the lot into a public park for people to enjoy. She then receives a call from her mother and heads over there immediately.

Debbie suggests going on a trip somewhere but Mark says he needs to stay behind in case Cecil needs him for something. She tries to remind him that he needs to think for himself, but it turns into a disagreement before he is called away by Cecil.

Immortal is putting the new Guardians through some tough training sessions and Rex complains about them. While he’s in the locker room, he runs into Kate and realizes that she is sleeping with Immortal now.

Russ sits at home and watches a show covering the death of the original Guardians. His landlord tells him that he needs to come up with the rent soon or else he’ll have to find somewhere else to live.

Invincible is flying to Midnight City to investigate potential sightings of Darkwing. He comes across someone in Darkwing’s costume killing people and he tries to stop him.

He states that he was Nightboy, Darkwing’s former assistant who has now taken on the mantle of his predecessor. Cecil points out that he’s lost his mind and Mark needs to bring him in.

Mark approaches him but Nightboy has an exoskeleton that allows him to match up his strength with that of Invincible, and he has a connection to someplace called the shadowverse, an alternate dimension of darkness filled with unknown horrors.

Nightboy throws Mark into the shadowverse and taunts him but Mark grabs onto his hand and intimidates him enough that he takes them back to their world. Mark then knocks Nightboy unconscious and checks in with Cecil.

Debbie shows up at the GDA to scold Cecil for calling on Mark too many times, and she is shocked to see Donald. Cecil ushers her out and insists that he’s looking out for Mark.

Eve’s mother says that they’re going through some financial trouble but she doesn’t want to make a big deal out of it because her father wouldn’t accept any help from Eve. Her father returns wearing a fast food chain uniform and tells her that he lost his old job.

She wants to help and turns an apple into pure gold so that they can sell it but he vehemently refuses to take her help. Amber is at her summer job at the soup kitchen when Mark shows up to take her out to lunch.

He flies her out to the Eiffel Tower in Vegas before Cecil calls him on another job. He meets Cecil at the coastline under a storm where Cecil explains that the Atlanteans want justice for the murder of their king.

Mark is told that since his father is gone, he must take his place and marry the king’s widow, Queen Aquaria, according to Atlantean customs. Mark reluctantly heads down to Atlantis to face judgment while Cecil gets called away on another matter.

The Lizard League is attacking a lab and Cecil sends out the Guardians to take care of them. Russ takes the form of Rex to join the fight, then reveals himself as the “Shapesmith” a human hero with shapeshifting powers.

Mark stands before Queen Aquaria and tells her that he cannot marry her. She tells him that they abolished that rule years ago, and now his judgment will be decided in trial by combat.

He faces a huge undersea monster called the Depth Dweller and has trouble against its sonic scream. Cecil sends in some missiles to help Mark escape, but they also break the monster’s chains and give it a chance to attack the Atlanteans.

Mark decides to go back and help, saving Queen Aquaria’s life. He sends the monster back into the trench it emerged from and barely makes it back to the surface.

Debbie attempts to go back to work but when she sees a husband behaving rudely with his wife, she almost fights back before her colleague de-escalates the situation. He tells Debbie that she isn’t ready yet.

She goes back and has a breakdown which Mark walks into. Cecil has his people isolate the scream of the monster for emergency purposes since it affects Mark.

Eve returns to check in on her parents, who threw the golden apple in the trash. When she argues with them, her father shows her a news article and claims that her good deeds don’t always pan out.

The article reported that the park she made with her powers was on top of a sinkhole and it was swallowed up, but thankfully no lives were lost.

Shapesmith introduces himself to the rest of the Guardians, while the Sequids back on Mars slowly take control of the dead Martians with the real Russ leading them.

The Supreme Lizard is giving a rousing speech to the rest of the soldiers when King Lizard shows up and kills the Supreme Lizard to take back control.

Review

This is an incredibly stuffed episode with so many things covered. Mark has three different adventures, while they also focus on Eve, the Lizard League, the Shapesmith, and the Guardians. There’s also some progression in Debbie’s story as well.
The book-to-screen adaptation has been fantastic so far, but it does seem like they’re overstretched at times and this episode is a clear example of that.
Certain narrative decisions are quite clever, such as Donald’s return is just played out without an explanation, leaving the audience to feel the same way that Debbie felt when she saw him again.
