Rick and Morty season 7 episode 4 sees Morty try to make the absurdly horrific source of his beloved spaghetti more ethical.
Recap
Rick serves up some delicious spaghetti to the whole family and everyone is having a good time, almost too good to be entirely normal.
Morty is suspicious and rightly so, as he soon stumbles upon Rick munching on more of the spaghetti, that are actually the innards of an alien corpse.
He learns from Rick that he sources the spaghetti from a planet where people who commit suicide turn into spaghetti. Morty can’t keep the truth to himself for long, because of the guilt.
He breaks it to his family, as well as reveals to the president of the planet how their suicide victims make for such a delicacy for the other planets.
The situation snowballs to the point where the planet’s society collapses as the government pushes for more people to commit suicide so that the demand for spaghetti from so many planets can be met. It’s Capitalism on steroids and meatballs.
Morty asks Rick to do something but his initial effort to make spaghetti production ethical fails.
Finally, he uses a terminally ill person’s memories to show Morty a life well-lived, before having the guy commit suicide, making Morty vomit at the prospect of eating the spaghetti, along with all else who had been craving it.
Review
- Rick and Morty season 7 episode 4 is another wild ride where an outrageous series of events are used to tell a relatively normal, simple moral.
- It’s also the first episode in this season that has Rick and Morty go on an adventure together. Their banter was missing thus far and it is great to see the titular duo bicker and banter again.
- The voices have been more than sufficient but there does seem to be an ever-so-subtle difference that somehow feels more noticeable than the earlier episodes.
