Shelter season 1 episode 4 recap & review: Phantom Threads

In episode 4 of Harlan Coben’s Shelter, Ema and Arthur uncover a major clue regarding Dylan Shakes’ life, and Mickey learns something significant about the day of his accident. The episode is streaming on Prime Video.

Recap

Mickey is still thinking about the night of his accident after seeing the picture that Lizzie showed him. Shira is a ball of nerves after fooling around with Hannah the previous night.

Mickey tells Arthur and Ema about the nazi but they have their doubts. He’s mad at them for thinking he’s crazy and when they show him that Rachel is the one who cleared Ashley’s locker, he confronts her alone.

She tells him to meet her after school at her place and then goes to Troy to apologize. At the basketball pancake meet-up, Hannah asks Shira to make a speech in front of everyone.

Shira remembers their school days and the first time they realized that they were in love with each other. Hannah asks if they can hang out later and Shira agrees.

Mickey asks Mrs. Friedman about the picture he was given and she shows him the real picture of the Butcher of Louz, making him realize that the picture he has was fake.

Arthur is getting ready for his audition for the Phantom of the Opera right after Buck. He gets nervous on stage and Ema joins him to help him through the audition.

Ema performs beautifully and Whitney is so excited for her. Hannah and Shira get a meal together and Shira says she left town because she only wanted to be with Hannah but didn’t know what to do about it back then.

Ema visits Mickey to apologize and tells him that she researched the accident report further. Mickey remembers that the ambulance that arrived had a different logo and when they investigate, they find that the ambulance was stolen the night before.

Arthur finds out that Mrs. Kent has gone missing and he tells Ema about it. The casting announcement goes up and Ema gets the lead role, although she doesn’t plan on taking it. She changes her tune when Whitney says she’s looking forward to spending more time with Ema.

Ken goes to Lizzie’s house because of an anonymous tip about a body but they cover their tracks. Ema and Arthur sneak into Dr. Kent’s office looking for information about Ashley but instead find Dylan Shakes’ file.

Dr. Kent was the boy’s doctor and documented how his father abused him regularly. They also notice that Dr. Kent saw Dylan on the day of his disappearance.

Lizzie and the sunglasses man meet Mrs. Friedman because they know that she made the anonymous tip. The two women have a history with each other and Lizzie tells her not to mess with her business ever again or she’ll be killed.

Mickey meets Rachel at her place and Rachel says that she saved Ashley from being kidnapped and then let her stay in her pool house because she was involved in something dangerous.

Suddenly, Rachel gets an alert that there is an intruder and the power and phone lines are cut before Mickey sees Octoface coming in. They both make a run for Ashley.

Review

  • There are definitely some subplots that could be ignored at the moment and it wouldn’t affect the narrative adversely. Hannah and Shira’s past connection feels outside the series but it could lead to something interesting.
  • Adrian Greensmith continues to be charming as Arthur, and he riffs off well with Abby Corrigan in this episode. Their joint audition is great and Corrigan showcases a magnificent singing voice.
  • The mystery is definitely chugging along at a decent pace, and the aptly titled episode does bring a few more elements into focus regarding the conspiracy.
