Castaway Diva season 1 episode 2 recap & review: Coincidence vs. Fate

In the second episode of Castaway Diva, Mok-ha gets rescued by a man who reminds her of someone from her past. The episode is now streaming on Netflix.

Recap

The episode introduces two brothers — Kang Bo-geol and Woo-hak. While Woo-hak is older, he acts like he is the younger of the two. The brothers are in their thirties, but Woo-hak still insists on sharing a room with Bo-geol.

Woo-hak also insists on accompanying Bo-geol wherever he goes. When Bo-geol volunteers to clean an island with a group, Woo-hak tags along. It is his drone that Mok-ha finds. She follows the drone, and when Bo-geol comes to confront her about it, he finds out that she has been stuck on that island for 15 years.

Mok-ha is rescued and reenters society, but she does not let go of Ki-ho’s shoes. She is taken to the hospital, and the police help her recover her identity. Mok-ha is 31 years old now, but in terms of her education and development, she is still 16.

Woo-hak and Bo-geol both work at YGN. Woo-hak is a reporter, and Bo-geol is a producer. Woo-hak always rebels and does the opposite of what Bo-geol says, so when his brother asks him not to make a story out of Mok-ha’s story, he does exactly that.

When no family member or friend reaches out to take Mok-ha home, she decides to go to her hometown. Woo-hak, who has been asked to find out more about her story, goes with her.

Mok-ha’s father’s restaurant and home are now illegally occupied by other townspeople. With Woo-hak there, they fail to take advantage of Mok-ha. She makes it clear that she does not want the land and that she is only there to find Ki-ho.

The townspeople tell her that Ki-ho stopped going to school after Mok-ha disappeared. He ran away from home and reported his father for domestic violence. His father lost his job and went to Seoul to look for Ki-ho. He has still not stopped looking for his son.

Woo-hak goes to Ki-ho’s house with Mok-ha and finds the notes that Ki-ho used to keep in his room. Mok-ha believes that Ki-ho is still alive and tells Woo-hak how her father would have killed her if Ki-ho had not made her leave the island.

Mok-ha decides to return to Seoul with Woo-hak to finish what she had started 15 years ago. If she does not make her dream of meeting Ran-joo come true, then everything that she has gone through on that uninhabited island will be all for naught.

Mok-ha refuses to live at the shelter, so Woo-hak makes her stay at his house without telling his family. Mok-ha tells him about her past and how she was approached by Ran-joo’s manager. She has too many regrets about her life to worry about the future.

Mok-ha tells Woo-hak that he reminds her of Ki-ho. This leads to him doubting whether he is Ki-ho and not Woo-hak, as he lost his memories when he was young and does not remember anything from his childhood, but his brother dismisses his concerns.

YGN is looking for a star who is past their heyday and is free of scandals. Bo-geol suggests that they consider Ran-joo and is sent to see a performance of hers at a village festival. Woo-hak also takes Mok-ha to the village festival.

Ran-joo is no longer the star that he used to be. She cannot even perform live anymore. When she comes to know that she will have to sign live at the festival, she gets drunk.

Mok-ha is still a huge fan of Ran-joo. She distributes the balloons that Ran-joo’s fans used to bring to her concerts among the audience members and asks them to cheer for Ran-joo. When she finds out that Ran-joo is not in the condition to sing, she offers to be a playback singer for her.

Ran-joo steps onto the stage, expecting that no one is going to care about her performance, only to be met with loud cheers and balloons, thanks to Mok-ha. Ran-joo is reminded of the time when she used to be a successful singer.

Mok-ha sings and Ran-joo lipsyncs. Mok-ha’s voice moves Woo-hak, the audience, as well as Ran-joo, who gets praised by the audience, as they think that she is the one who has been singing.

After the performance, Ran-joo asks Mok-ha for her name and hugs her, and Mok-ha’s dream comes true. She has been waiting for this moment all her life, and her struggle of the last 15 years gains meaning now.

It is then revealed that Woo-hak was not convinced when Bo-geol told him that he is Woo-hak and not Jung Ki-ho, as he found out that Ki-ho’s mother used to tell him the same thing that Woo-hak and Bo-geol’s mother tells them.

Convinced that he is Ki-ho, Woo-hak decided to do everything that Ki-ho would have done if he had reunited with Mok-ha after years. That is why he accompanied her to the village festival and helped her meet with her idol.

Review

  • Compared to the previous episode, this one is a feel-good episode. It is entertaining and amusing with a wholesome ending.
  • It is not just the Kang brothers who crack a laugh from the audience, but their whole family. They will definitely want to see them together in the upcoming episodes.
  • When Woo-hak is introduced, he seems to be the polar opposite of Ki-ho. The fact that Woo-hak and Ki-ho might be the same person is something that was very unexpected, but it was a good twist.
