Episode 4 of Loki revolves around the members of the TVA enlisting Victor Timely’s help to save the place while Ravonna plots her revenge. The episode is streaming on Disney+.
Recap
Miss Minutes and Ravonna are at the end of time and Miss Minutes shows her a memory that was erased from her mind. She is standing side by side with He Who Remains as they discuss watching over the timeline as partners.
However, once she leaves, he asks Miss Minutes to enact protocol 42 which would erase the memories of everyone else who helped him win the war.
Victor arrives at the TVA and walks around for a bit before Loki and Mobius catch up to him. They tell him that they need his help with the Loom and take him down to see O.B.
Judge Gamble and B-15 discuss what must be done about General Dox. Gamble tells the hunter that she can convince Dox about this new version of the TVA and get her on their side.
Victor and O.B. come face to face with each other and immediately credit the other for their work. They realize that they’re stuck in an endless cycle where they influence each other’s development.
O.B. and Casey tell the others that they’ve been facing one specific problem with their plan but Victor says that he has just the thing to fix it but it’ll take their combined efforts and some time to get it done.
Mobius suggests they get some pie while they wait but Sylvie scolds him for taking things so easy and accuses him of not caring enough about the stakes and the lives of everyone in the timelines.
B-15 goes into the cell to talk to General Dox and tells her that despite their different opinions, they share a common goal to protect the TVA and everyone in it. B-15 asks them to consider standing by their side and protecting them from Ravonna or any other threats.
Sylvie lands up in the automat and Loki shows up to have a few words with her. He tells her that Mobius is just trying to make the best of a terrible situation and with some hope and optimism, they can definitely ride this tough wave.
Ravonna and Miss Minutes open a door into the cell and make their case to General Dox and the others. She offers them their own lives on the timeline, but Brad is the only one who chooses to be with her so Ravonna kills all the others.
Victor sees Mobius drinking some hot cocoa and is fascinated by the concept. He asks to see it and one of the hunters offers to take him to the machine. Brad prunes the hunter and takes Victor hostage while B-15 walks into the cell and sees what remains of General Dox.
The tempads stop working and O.B. figures that Miss Minutes is messing with the system. Brad takes Victor to the war room where Ravonna and Miss Minutes are waiting for him.
O.B., Mobius, Casey, and B-15 head to the Loom with the device that should fix it while Sylvie and Loki go searching for Victor. Sylvie gets on the elevator but Loki is shut out so he has to use the stairs.
He goes up and sees his past self moments before he was pulled out of the timestream and realizes that his present self was the one who pruned him. Sylvie walks out of the elevator and Loki picks up the phone ringing in the corner.
It’s O.B. asking them what is taking them so long. He claims to have a way to take Miss Minutes out of the equation but it would also remove the safeguards in the TVA that stop people from using magic.
He goes ahead and reboots the system which causes Miss Minutes to disappear and Ravonna sends Brad to check things out. He walks into an empty hallway with Loki waiting for him at the other end. Sylvie sneaks up behind him and uses her powers to warp his mind.
He goes back to the war room and pulls Ravonna aside so that Loki and Sylvie can save Victor. Brad then prunes her before Sylvie’s magic wears off. Victor goes down to the Loom where he scans his aura to open the blast doors.
He volunteers to be the one who goes out into the gangway but as soon as he steps outside, he disintegrates because of the Temporal radiation. O.B. and Casey don’t understand what exactly went wrong as the Loom cannot hold it anymore.
An explosion rings out and Loki and the others watch on with varying emotions as they get wiped out of existence.
Review
- The contrasting dynamics between Sylvie and Mobius, and Loki and Mobius are wonderful. While Loki has developed a close bond with Mobius at this point, Sylvie has a very different reaction to his attitude and that is very interesting to observe.
- As long as this quality is observed, they will be praised, and the cinematography continues to be one of the shining lights of the series. The series is visually stunning in so many different ways, from the color schemes to the framing and sets.
- In hindsight, Jonathan Majors’ inclusion in this series is certainly problematic and one that creators could have done without, but his performance as Victor Timely is quite impressive and distinct from his turn as Kang or He Who Remains.
