In Demon Slayer season 3 episode 10, Mitsuri takes on the Upper-Rank Demon Hantengu, as her past and incredible strength are revealed.

Mitsuri arrives and takes down the demon’s wooden dragons with ease. The demon is surprised at the abilities and strength that Mitsuri exhibits, as she slashes away at the dragons, perishing them with her unique sword.
However, when she takes a stab at the body of the demon, she errs and doesn’t account for the fact that decapitating his head would do nothing to him, something that Tanjiro screams at her while she’s in mid-air. By the time she recognizes that it’s a bit too late and the demon bellows a sonic attack at her.
However, her quick response and resilient body help her tank that attack, even if she loses consciousness momentarily. Looking at the perfect opportunity the demon pounces on it and goes for the kill, while Tanjiro, Nezuko, and Genya rush to protect her in her vulnerable state.
Meanwhile, she thinks back on her past and the ensuing flashback reveals how she was always an incredibly strong person, even during her childhood. She’d defeat sumo wrestlers when it came to appetite or arm wrestling even as a little child. However, these displays and qualities will prove to be a source of sorrow for her as suitors reject her.
She’d dye her hair black and pretend to be weak all in order to look more presentable and hopefully get married. However, when one suitor does emerge as the likely husband-to-be, she withdraws and decides to be herself. She also remembers how Iguro treated her so amicably and how Demon Slayer Corps was so accepting of her powers and true self.
Mitsuri finally regains consciousness and apologizes to the three others who just protected her unconscious body from the demon’s attack. She then launches her attack on the demon while the box of wood keeping Hantengu is set loose, and Tanjiro, Nezuko, and Genya run after it.
The Hashira keeps the demon busy while the three others try their best to slice off Hantengu. Hantengu manages to flee again but Tanjiro sniffs him out again; Genya throws a tree at him, and Nezuko goes for the assault, just Demon Slayer season 3 episode 10 rolls the credits.
Review
- Demon Slayer season 3 kicks off the last stretch of the Hantengu battle in its penultimate episode, and it’s exciting to see the incredible strength of Mitsuri.
- In terms of the battle, though, not much happens and the climax is left for the final episode of the season, which would also include Hantengu’s backstory.
- Talking about backstories, as repetitive and annoying as they can be for their formulaic use, Mitsuri’s flashback does swerve to a better path in that it doesn’t show yet another traumatic past rife with blood, gore, and shell-shocked children with eyes as wide as an owl’s.
