Only Murders in the Building season 3 episode 5 recap & review: Ah, Love!

In episode 5 of Only Murders in the Building season 3, Charles, Oliver, and Mabel focus on their dating lives and each makes breakthroughs in the case. The episode is streaming on Hulu.

Recap:

Oliver and Mabel ask Charles if he has asked Joy about her lipstick but he says he hasn’t gotten around to it yet. He assures them he will ask her eventually.

Oliver is getting ready for his date with Loretta, while Mabel says she’s meeting Tobert for a stakeout at a place with a fancy dress code.

Charles builds up the courage to ask Joy how her lipstick ended up in Ben’s dressing room and she is hurt by his assumption that she might have had something to do with Ben’s death.

Sazz shows up with an engagement gift and Joy says she’s going for the cake tasting by herself so that Charles can sit with Sazz and contemplate what he’s done.

Oliver arrives at Loretta’s apartment which is a very small yet crowded space. Mabel meets Tobert at a piano bar where Jonathan sings cabaret some nights.

Tobert says that he’s been following Jonathan around and rules him out as a suspect but he still needed a reason to spend some time with Mabel which is why he invited her on this date.

Sazz asks Charles what the problem is and decides to play a game to diagnose what is going on in his head. Loretta ends up overcooking her pork chops and Oliver loses a tooth trying to bite into one.

After a few sips of wine, she touches upon Oliver’s snort whenever he laughs and the conversation gradually moves to pigs as she calls Ben a “f***ing pig”. When Oliver asks her to elaborate, she picks up his tooth and says that she knows where they can go to deal with it.

Mabel and Tobert have a good time together until Mabel notices Jonathan meeting someone mysterious at the end of his performance. She catches an exchange but when Tobert tries to catch a glimpse, he knows over a waiter and draws attention to them.

Sazz successfully figures out that Charles just doesn’t believe he deserves to be loved and if he can get over that, he’ll be fine. Loretta takes Oliver on a ferry ride and they smoke a joint together and chat.

She tells him that Ben accused her of being obsessed with him and they had an altercation on opening night where she called him a “f***ing pig”. She also tells him that Ben treated everyone poorly, including his own brother Dickie.

Tobert later tells Mabel that the guy Jonathan was meeting was a doctor to the stars called “Dr. C” who met Ben often but he doesn’t know what Ben took from him. She takes him back to her place to show him the murder board they’ve come up with so far.

Joy returns and Charles has an honest conversation with her. She says that she went to see Ben because he had a red mark on his face which needed to be taken care of, and that’s when her lipstick might have fallen out in his room.

Charles says that he was the one who punched Ben right after the altercation that Loretta mentioned. He also admits that he proposed to Joy by mistake and hearing this, she decides she’s had enough and leaves, breaking off the engagement.

Oliver spends the night at Loretta’s place and when she goes into the bathroom, he finds a book filled with news clippings of Ben, suggesting that she actually might have been obsessed with Ben.

Review:

  • Jane Lynch is such a fun presence when Sazz makes an appearance. It’s a different character compared to her usual roles and she has so much fun with it.
  • The music in this episode is delightful. With love and relationships as the central theme, the playful score sets the perfect tone for exchanges between the various couples.
  • Meryl Streep continues to prove such a brilliant addition to the cast with her performances. Her chemistry with Martin Short is adorable and she seems to be enjoying herself.
